About the only thing I enjoyed in this film was the little girl's performance. The overall movie didn't impress me, the way the little girl was treated bothered me, even if it was supposedly "out of love." There is a scene when little girls are so in need of mother's care that they dance with prostitutes and imagine that the prostitutes are their mothers. Uncomfortable! The whole mystic creature returning from prehistoric times and message of "you have to be a beast to survive in the outskirts of the South" just didn't resonate with me. I thought it was mediocre at best. In fact, so mediocre, that I'm extremely surprised it was nominated for best picture at the Oscars.
