John Carter
When Civil War veteran John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) mysteriously awakes on the surface of Mars -- also called Barsoom -- he little expects the adventure that awaits him. Carter reluctantly becomes embroiled in an epic conflict among the red planet's inhabitants, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). As Barsoom is poised on the brink of collapse, war-weary Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that everyone's fate is in his hands.

I had no idea what to expect when walking in to see John Carter. Half of me expected to see a kitschy sci-fi with JarJar Binks-like characters, the other half optimistically hoped for something more. I left the theatre pleasantly surprised and feeling that my money was well-enough spent.
Make no mistake, this movie is not for young children. It is best aimed at teenage males who have a taste for sci-fi. The story is not overly complex, but not so tragically simple that it bores. The special effects are spectacular; the fight-scenes are violent, but not gory. The acting is not top-notch, but is surprisingly good for a movie of this type. Really, my only complaint is that theatres keep making it more and more difficult to avoid the 3D versions of movies by not giving the 'normal' version very many screen times. There is no point or need for 3D in John Carter.
Potentially objectionable material includes quite a bit of violence, some clothing that is not exactly risque but also not exactly modest, and bits of language. -
Many people have had a hard time with this film. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. It had the right balance of humor and seriousness. Action sequences are fantastic. The musical score is decent. I like how they integrated Carter's inner conflicts with the overarching story. This movie is worth your time, especially if you're into sci-fi. There is a fair amount of alien violence that you will want your little ones to avoid.

I thought the movie was enjoyable.
It was a high-budget, low acting Disney movie. Lot's of special effects, but there was something lacking from the characters.
As an FYI for parents, the women are sometimes scantly clad as part of their culture. Nothing sexual, but may not be inappropriate for a younger audience.
Pet peeve: The lead actor's voice reminded me of Christian Bale's batman voice. -
Fun sci-fi movie with great special effects, good story and mediocre acting.

The book that this is based off of is amazing. Edgar Rice Burroughs is the same author who wrote all the Tarzan novels. He is a creative genius. I just wish this movie came out during the summer and not the same time as another sci-fi action movie, Hunger Games, which was an alright read, but I felt like I was inside the mind of a 14 year old the whole time. This book has a gripping story of sacrifice and heroism, fighting odds, finding a cause, a mission, pursuing a goal and living by your own will. Contrastingly, apocalyptic movies all have some value in their universal message of "don't let it come to this" and Hunger Games is probably trying to teach us "don't accept totalitarianism" and "don't become so enamored with grossly violent entertainment." There is often felt an appealing despair, a comfortably attractive sadness in the dark world of tomorrow where you struggle to live day to day in Hunger Games, but this film is unique and rings with the language of antiquity, appreciated by those who love literature and powerful imagery about a type X personality, an Alpha male, who experiences a change, who makes a change and who simply has a new adventure.

It was an alright movie but it dragged on way too long. Probably worth seeing at the dollar theatre or getting from Redbox.

I know this movie got killed by the critics and wasn't financially successfully but I really enjoyed the film. I liked the story line and the characters. I would actual see it again or on DVD when it comes out.

While they could have done more with the story, I thought this film was better than its box office take suggests that it should be. I quite liked the way it ended.

Aside from some pacing issues towards the beginning, "John Carter" is a pretty enjoyable popcorn flick that does "Star Wars" better than the "Star Wars" prequels. If some elements occasionally seem overly familiar, well, that's just because everything from Superman to "Avatar" owe their existence to the Edgar Rice Burroughs novels "John Carter" adapts.

I enjoyed John Carter! The end of the film left me wanting more. The best part of the movie is the story, about loss and love. The movie looks great, and I loved seeing the different Utah locations.
This is one fun and exciting movie.April 6th, 2012 Details -
I was massively disappointed. Love the books, but the film didn't quite make it.

Well done!!! I have read Edgar Rice Burroughs; my husband has not. We both thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The movie was more satisfying than the book to me. Excellent product.

It's reasonable to argue that "John Carter" makes a superior "Cowboys

This was a thoroughly enjoyable movie. I thought the story was good, and kept me engrossed the whole time. It was well worth my time to see.
There is quite a bit of violence so the PG-13 rating is appropriate. This is not a movie for younger children.April 23rd, 2012 Details -
Entertaining, but too long. The plot fizzled. If you want an action flick, might be worth your time.

Entertaining at points, serious flaws in the plot, CGI, however, is very impressive.
Overall, the acting wasn't very good and the princess had some outfits that were quite revealing. Even though the plot was obviously fictional, many scenes were just too unrealistic for my liking.
I think you could find a better show to watch but if you absolutely insist on this one, you won't be bored, but I doubt you'll care to see it again.August 20th, 2012 Details -
I thought this was a cool movie. I didn't feel like it was the greatest acting, but the storyline is interesting and the special effects are awesome.

There was a bit of profanity in the book and also a lot of violence and gore. The premise of the movie is that John Carter is the savior/warrior of Mars and he exhibits this through violent tendencies. Also, the main female role is scantily clad throughout practically the entire film. I enjoyed the movie, but wish there could have been more depth in the story line.

This movie is Avatar meets Dune with George Lucas type directing. In other words check your brain at the door. It looks great on Blu-Ray however you could watch the movie without sound because you will get nothing from the terrible acting in this film. No wonder Disney lost 24 million on it. Not to mention the poor advertising

This movie is a complete waste of your time. The movie had no clear plot and was therefore very hard to follow. I didn't even make it through the whole thing. All in all, this was a very shoddy movie that the world could do without.

Never knew anything about the book before the movie, so my review is not tainted by book bias. I really liked the movie. Great combination of humor, action, drama. Don't know this actors name, but really enjoyed him as well. My reason for marking high PG was immodest dress a few times and violence. We have already bought the DVD. Disney apparently lost a ton of money on this movie and my guess is because they sold it wrong. The previews didn't capture my kids interest. That's why it didn't sell. We saw the movie because of me and my kids ended up really liking it as well.

Boring movie. No real sense of story or direction.

This is a highly underated movie. I believe poor timing and a bad trailer created the biggest movie flop of the year. John Carter has excellent visuals and a great story. Slightly confusing at times, but over all a great movie.

The story line was great a twist on what we think of Mars and the CGI was awesome. My 8 year old boy was enthralled.

I'm not sure why this movie gets dogged so much - I guess it is because it was a big box office disappointment. Don't let it's box office performance deceive you - this is a much better move than it's ticket sales indicate. Disney simply didn't know how to market this one very well.
I found the special effects to be very good and it kept me engaged as the show progressed. The storyline was a little tough to get into at first but it didn't take long to where I wanted to see what would happen next. I don't recall there being much language, but there was quite a bit of action. Overall, it's a good movie - check it out if you see it at Redbox.November 24th, 2012 Details -
A movie that was very under-rated, but was happily surprised to find that my husband and I liked it very much!
