Perhaps one of Matthew McConaughey's best performances showing his versatility as an actor. He leaves behind the charm and performs on an entirely new level. The story gets you involved and leaves you thinking about the movie once it's over.

There's a sense of adventure, emotion, and childhood feelings and are really brought to life with this movie. The teenage actors, especially Ellis, do a phenomenal job!

    Points for parents:
There is a lot of casual swearing in this movie. The language is nothing more than what teenagers are going to hear in the halls of school or out in public with peers, however, it is frequent in this movie.

first off- this movie is slow, but definitely worth your time. i really enjoyed seeing matthew mcconaughey in a more dramatic role of the antihero. the kids' performances were impressive. language and violence is a concern, but overall i really enjoyed the film.

One of the best films of 2013. Matthew McConaughey is fantastic in this film and and so are the two boys he befriends. The MIssissippi River backdrop in this film make it interesting enough but the story is also great. It is like a modern day Mark Twain novel-type movie. It has some good messages in it and will have you thinking about the film after it is over.
There is a fair share of language in it, as well as some violence and some content not suitable for children. It definitely deserved a PG-13 movie and is intended for that age and older.

"Take Shelter" director Jeff Nichols tries his hand at a more conventional type of storytelling with this coming-of-age tale set on the Mississippi River. But even though the genre might be more straightforward, it's no less satisfying than past efforts. Nichols creates a South steeped in folklore and populated by larger-than-life characters that feel like they could have stepped out of a Mark Twain story.

One of those is Matthew McConaughey's character, the titular Mud. If you've only ever seen McConaughey slumming it in rom-coms, watch this to see just how great he can really be. He brings a perfect mix of charisma and underlying menace to the character, and he more than proves his mettle as an actor.

"Mud" does have some crude language in it (as is often the case for this kind of movie) and some gun violence, but otherwise it's pretty tame and should be okay for most teenagers/older kids.

This is the most thought provoking film I have seen in awhile. I felt the characters were real and deep. First movie I've seen in months where I was left thinking about the themes and development of the film long after it was over. I rated it for a little older age group because of the profanity.

This was very well done. It is nice to see McConaughey in a good drama role. He was excellent and the two young boys did a stand up job. The story seems slow but really keeps you thinking.

As others have mentioned, McConaughey puts forth a great performance. The subject matter of the film includes some life lessons that leave you thinking about what can be justified when you love another person. Overall, though it moves slowly, it is worth a watch.

Parent's beware: there is some profanity used, most of which didn't bother me other than it was the young kids using a lot of the language. In addition, there are a couple of different times that adults punch or beat up the young 14 year old boy.

This movie was very, very interesting to me. I had to take a break halfway through because it is a bit slow but after finishing the film I felt very satisfied.

Matthew McConaughey is amazing. He's one of my favorites to watch and he does a brilliant job here. It's an interesting show that made me laugh out loud every once in awhile. Worth the rent.

I watched this movie on a flight from JFK to SLC and it was a truly awful boring movie. I waited for some sort of plot or for something to actually pick up, but it really never did. Given all the positive reviews on this I realize I am in the minority, but I do believe this was one of the worse movies of 2013 so fare.

MUD is a striking coming-of-age story about a young teenager who comes into contact with a man fleeing the law and a powerful family looking for revenge. Set in a small town in Arkansas, the story and characters are well done, with some positive content, but the movie is a little too long and contains enough negative content to require extreme caution...
