I will admit this film is darker than other Disney films in the animated section but it's actually a very good Disney movie. They put the story in a nice way and still has songs that are very good. I believe it's sort of something different from Disney that I thought worked out very well.

Significantly more violent and sexy than the Disney baseline, this depiction of the titular Hunchback's tale is nonetheless dramatically toned down for children compared to the classic novel.

For example, the novel's depiction of general societal corruption and decadence is in the film combined down into a single lustful, self-righteous Catholic priest who personifies the adage that power corrupts. One of the songs is entirely dedicated to his perception that a gypsy dancer must be evil because she has somehow made him lust after her, a deeply disturbing depiction of realistic villainous motive (namely, sexual coercion).

That plus overt discrimination against gypsies, a primary good guy getting violently bloodied in combat, and a perpetual threats against life and limb place this film on the mature side of PG, if not edging it into PG-13.

Solid Pg-13 for multiple scenes of violent content which include: A woman dying from being slammed against the steps of a cathedral, arrow puncture, hazing style abuse of the title character, Bad guy falling to a firey death and more. this is not a children's show. It is dark and serious most of the time. Attempts are made at lightening it up with the gargoyles. but to no avail. But to no avale. Overrall the message and artistic beauty of the film are really good. But only for adults.

It's a pretty good movie but the characters do say some bible words that may be upsetting to little kids. I think it should've been rated PG just for some bible words they've said and for some of the abuse scenes with Quasimodo and the Esmeralda fire stake burning scene. And the battle scenes at the Church.
