ages 6+ | 94 % Say It's Worth Your Time

Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) is a Norse teenager from the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. His progressive views and weird sense of humor make him a misfit, despite the fact that his father (Gerard Butler) is chief of the clan. Tossed into dragon-fighting school, he endeavors to prove himself as a true Viking, but when he befriends an injured dragon he names Toothless, he has the chance to plot a new course for his people's future.

This was an ok movie. It has a good message about what trouble misunderstanding and lack of communication can cause. It has it's funny moments and the animation is fine enough. I didn't like the rudeness of most of the Viking children, (although I suppose they're Vikings, so I guess that's what they do best). I don't think parents would appreciate their kids acting like little Vikings, though. It was ok, but I wouldn't watch it again.

A great, action-packed family movie, but with too much violence and intensity for younger kids.

If you've read the book - just know that this is COMPLETELY different than the book. So much so that they are not worth comparing. The movie is great and appropriate for kid 5 and older. Kids younger than 5 may be OK but there are some scary scenes and a lot of fighting with dragons. Some of the kids characters in the show would insult one another frequently. I liked the movie's theme and what it teaches kids. Definitely worth your time.

This movie made me cry and laugh better than most extreme story lay out movies for adults. I deemed this movie to be the best movie I saw all that year and i'm a huge movie buff. This is perfect for everyone from 1 to 92!

I actually loved this. Very cool story about the most feared dragon actually being the most friendly and playful. This film is about overcoming fear, learning not to judge, and working as a team as opposed to competition. It also focuses on individual talent and breaking the chains of tradition, while keeping honor. Good stuff!

Just recently watched this again on DVD. Wow, what an excellent film. The plot, pacing, camera angles, animation, and acting are superb. From beginning to its pleasant ending you are drawn in and engrossed by this masterpiece. Well Done Dreamworks, well done. this is a solid PG for violence and some frightening imagery.

This one surprised me because the previews made it look mediocre at best. But I gave it a chance and fell awkwardly in love with it. Now it's in my personal top ten movies of all time. Good for everyone.

Great movie full of fun and excitement. I loved it and my 2 year old loved it. I enjoyed it more than most animated movies I saw last year, and that includes TS3.

I loved this movie! I always ignored DreamWorks movies, and jumped straight to Pixar but this movie converted me. I loved it. It is a great story that is inspiring, entertaining, and original (Ok, it was based off of a book). But it was new material and not full of potty jokes and annoying humor like many kids movies are often full of. I loved this movie.

Another reviewer said this movie lacks heart, depth, and originality. Honestly, I don't believe they actually watched this film. It's refreshing, sweet, thrilling, sad, touching, and explores themes ranging from bigotry to the difficult relationships between parents and teens. Love, trust, and teamwork are shown in their best light through a strong plot and fantastic visuals, as well as wonderful voice-over work. This film is watched regularly in my house, and my youngest child is 14.

Worth your time? Yes. Worth your time twice? Probably not. Lacking in heart, depth, originality, it was ultimately forgettable. The progression and climax of the film often felt cliché and forced. But it has some stunning visuals and fun moments. There are worse ways you could spend 98 minutes.

One of the best movies I've seen in a long time, How to Train Your Dragon inspires and thrills. The Night Fury dragon is the under-rated hero, accepting help from a human and eventually bringing some detente and even a sustained cooperation between dragon and human-kind. Somehow this movie reminds me of Avatar, with the themes of cross-species partnerships developing from an initial misunderstanding of motives and methods. Maybe a little scary for small children, but my 7 year old really enjoyed it.

Dreamworks animations studio has come a long way since Shrek. This is easily their best film, and in my opinion, the best animation to come out in the last several years (Pixar films included). It has a solid, well developed story. The conflict doesn't feel artificial or manipulated at all. The characters are all enjoyable, and their story arcs are very believable. You really cheer for them. The flight sequences are thrilling. The "test flight" scene is probably the most exciting and exhilarating thing I've seen in any film this year. The "romantic flight" is just beautiful, boasting some really original "camera" work, and gorgeous scenery. The computer animation is the most impressive I've seen. The "lighting" in the film is what really sets it apart from other computer animated films. The different kinds of fire that the dragons breath is all spectacular-looking, especially in the final battle, which is as gripping as you can get in a PG rated film (small children will probably be scared by this finale). The film has real heart, and isn't afraid to show the consequences of battle. It had me laughing, cheering, and nearly crying. It's a wonderful film, helped immensely by a fantastic musical score by John Powell that hits all the right notes. This is a nearly flawless film and the best I saw in 2010.
