As the son of Odin (Anthony Hopkins), king of the Norse gods, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) will soon inherit the throne of Asgard from his aging father. However, on the day that he is to be crowned, Thor reacts with brutality when the gods' enemies, the Frost Giants, enter the palace in violation of their treaty. As punishment, Odin banishes Thor to Earth. While Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Thor's brother, plots mischief in Asgard, Thor, now stripped of his powers, faces his greatest threat.

This film is a fantastic and visually goregous film. The world of Thor isn't only brought to life in this film but the entire dynamic between characters. This is one of director Kenneth Branagh's strongest suits is that he can capture characters interacting with one another. It's one of the reasons his version of Hamlet is of such a high caliber. Very entertaining and humorous give it a go.

Pretty close to being the worst of the Marvel movies, but... how can you skip one that introduces so many major elements of the larger cinematic universe?

Weak points: pretty much everything involving the human characters, the underdeveloped relationship with Natalie Portman's Jane Foster, and the excessive liberties taken with Norse mythology (sorry, I'm a purist).

Strengths: Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth. They're perfectly cast, and they play off each other well.

Overall, it's a pretty lightweight affair, but fans of the other Marvel movies should definitely watch it -- if only for the sake of getting more out of subsequent films involving these characters. Plus, "Thor 2" is a major improvement.

Thor is another solid entry from Marvel’s movie studio. The film manages to take one of the more obscure and weird superheroes and make him watchable. Directed by the venerable Shakespearian actor Kenneth Branagh, Thor deals with themes of love, humility, pride, and wisdom without feeling overbearing or ponderous. For the most part, Thor is just good fun, and while it doesn’t reach the level of superhero movie greats like The Dark Knight or Spiderman 2, it’s definitely worth a spin... See Full Review

Thor! Loved this show. I did think that it did have its slow moments but overall this show was awesome. I loved the part of Thor coming to earth and learning how to act. There is some great comedy in that section. This movie to me is pretty harmless and would be suitable for anyone 10+. I own this movie and love to watch it.

He is a comic book hero come to life. With his hammer he is all mighty, without his hammer all he becomes is a guy with big muscles. Thor must become worthy enough to conquer evil on his home world. This was a great movie if you are into the fictitious world of make believe where anything can happen and have everything still end up right in the end. As far as kids go, all they would focus on would be how he relates to them to make them want to be like him.

This film was alright. I wouldn't say it was the greatest comic book hero film I've seen. This is what happens when a family of Viking Gods use destruction to work out their problems. I expected more from Natalie Portman as well. See it at least once.

Even throws in the start to a great love story that will transition well into the next movie.

In many ways, the success of " the Avengers" was hanging on whether audiences could get behind the hammer wielding demigod from Asgard. Somehow, and with many thanks to Kenneth Branagh and Chris Hemsworth, Thor fit right in with other Marvel characters, giving the world a surprisingly entertaining standalone film, and "the Avengers" a worthwhile villain.

It's a fun film, and far better than I was expecting. The character development is good, the actors are very good, the casting was great, the writing was good, the music was good in several places, and the director, Kenneth Branagh, showed he can do more than Shakespearean adaptation well (and I'm sure Chris Hemsworth's excellent delivery of some lines of old English are to Branagh's credit). All in all, I'd say it's one of the better superhero movies I've seen lately.

It has no sexual content, very little language, almost all of the violence is against computer generated characters and did not offend me.

Thor is action based and obviously has violence since it's based from a comic book.

I loved this show because it didn't have much sexual content, the language was moderate, and the violence didn't have very much human-to-human combat so it seemed to me like teens would be less likely to try and imitate the fight scenes on each other in their backyards than they would have if it was human-to-human combat.

Overall, this show is great and of all the Marvel Comics shows, this is the most important to see before you see the Avengers.

    I want to be THOR.
    And it is pretty uplifting!
    Spiritual analogies:
Ignore his attitude at the beginning, and you have a lot of parallels...
I really hope other people caught a few of these.
A man is sent to earth,
He is made mortal (previously immortal or a god),
He is walks as a stranger among men,
He must be Worthy to wield power, (Your family surname is awesome)
He has three primary fellow warrior/helpers,
But he walks not among his own,
He "cleanses the temple" by attacking the compound,
He teaches Jane about things beyond the earth, the World's Tree, Yggdrasil (VIG-druh-sill), Asgard, and hooble telescope images, it is like she is the Samaritan woman at the well.
    OK, AND...
He gives his life, sacrificing himself to SAVE others, saying "You're safe. It's over" sounds very scriptural and much like "It is finished."
Then this same man is brought BACK TO LIFE,
He kills the destroyer, stopping the work of death,
He returns to his father and to his cosmic/celestial/heavenly home, finishing the story by also saving a whole race.

and the long heard and beard just topped it off...

And someone pointed out to me recently that the evil brother fell from heaven, saying he could have saved everyone... It could be my number 13, appropriately unlucky since it relates to Satan!

Carpenters also use hammers. Thor uses a hammer.

Except for the violence being too intense for younger children, this is a relatively safe movie for families. For a change from many of today's movies, it's one where Good wins the the Good vs. Bad battle. And even more unusual, it stays away from sexual immorality. I recommend it.

Superficially, there is nothing wrong with this movie. I have always loved the Thor comicbooks, and have read many Norse epics and mythology. The grandeur throughout the first half of the film is consonant with what one might expect a mythical realm to be. However, once Thor is banished to Earth, the story and epic feel begin to falter. It is Thor's supposed heroic deed, which restores his godhood that begs the question, "Was that really heroic.enough to regain Odin's favor?" The film makes significant strides to rebuild to the conclusion finish, but never sufficiently recovers from a rather disappointing climax. In fine, the movie simply had missed the opportunity to great.

Terrific action film that didn't necessarily feel the need to follow the traditional mold. I appreciate the depth and emotion that Kenneth Branagh brings to the story. I would like to start with why I did not like the movie before I say why I liked it; it was too short. I could have sat there for more story and/or plot development. I did however enjoy the movie more then I thought I would. I found the movie to be less intense then and more appropriate then other hero movies recently. I am highly impressed by how good this movie is. The portrayal of Thor as a super-powerful being was impressive. The complex portrayal of Loki, his personality and inner conflicts added something fresh to the story. Whereas most Bad guys are portrayed so one dimensionally, Loki went through a complex inner progression that eventually came to head with Thor and him battling it out in the end.
The beauty and splendor of Asgard was immensely appealing. Great art direction
The only complaint I have is a few segments go on a little long. But this is minor. Probably wouldn't be as good a movie without the few slow parts.

It was good to see Portman in this more upbeat, comical role this time around after Black Swan and No Strings Attached. I watched this in 3D at the IMAX which I highly recommend. I'm not a true Marvel/Thor fan but I thought this movie was a lot of fun and definitely Worth Your Time. The effects are fantastic and the 3D really made it pop. Some elements of the story line happen too fast and are a little unbelievable such as Thor falling in love and being humbled. However with the whole movie in mind those are small aspects that didn't really bother me. There is a lot of violence but it is all fantasy violence that is mostly inflicted on the "monsters." Good flick!
