In the year 10191, a spice called melange is the most valuable substance known in the universe, and its only source is the desert planet Arrakis. A royal decree awards Arrakis to Duke Leto Atreides and ousts his bitter enemies, the Harkonnens. However, when the Harkonnens violently seize back their fiefdom, it is up to Paul (Kyle MacLachlan), Leto's son, to lead the Fremen, the natives of Arrakis, in a battle for control of the planet and its spice. Based on Frank Herbert's epic novel.

Dune is a movie that tries to capture a fantastic, sci-fi universe and a deep, intriguing book with what blatantly shows as very limited technical capability ( it was made in 1984 ). Later, a more well-made mini-series was released ( in 2000 ) that has more time to tell the story and better special effects, but still suffers from the half-lame acting of a miniseries-quality cast. While I would recommend the miniseries over the 1984 movie, I would also recommend -- that is, if you're a sci-fi fan -- experiencing Dune in whatever way is available to you. Book form is most preferable ( isn't it always? ), followed by miniseries and then this version last.October 21st, 2013 · Details
For its time this film is amazing in visual affects and music. Unfortunately if you're not a fan of the book series this film is very difficult to figure out. It is dark, gritty and bizarre beyond belief. It is, after all, over 10,000 years in the future. Can't expect too many things to be the same. Being a fan of Sci-fi, this movie is iconic for me. But that is just my opinion. This film is not for little children. It is PG-13 for bloody violence, and disturbing imagery.April 24th, 2012 · Details
