Overall, True Grit is a very well done movie and if memory serves, a few of the actors in this movie earned Oscar nominations for their roles, including Jeff Bridges. This is remake of the John Wayne film from decades earlier.
There is a decent amount of violence and intense images that I wouldn't recommend for kids or even early teens. I was surprised at the type of violence I saw, including gunshots to the head which I wasn't expecting in a PG-13. Overall, True Grit was a good western and is worth your time.

While the acting is excellent everywhere, Jeff Bridges as the irascible Rooster Cogburn carries this film. He’s terrifying, hilarious, likeable, and deplorable all at once. The cinematography will immerse you in the wilderness of the old west, and the sense of danger and uncertainty keeps your hands on your pistol butts throughout. Be warned that this is a gritty old west with hangings, shootings, and stabbings, so don’t expect Little House on the Prairie... See Full Review

I didn't care much for this show. It had entertaining parts but ultimately wasn't my favorite for a western. It's tough to figure out Bridges character and his interests/motives.

The Coen brothers have made some really enjoyable films in the past, but I just did not see the point of this one. Everyone is pretty funny in this film – if you can understand them. The girl talks so fast that some of what she says might go past you before you realize it was funny. Bridge’s drunken marshal has a real slur to his speech that renders half of what he says almost too difficult to understand. Even Damon’s character is tough to understand once he nearly has his tongue severed at one point. Which brings me to my next point: there are a couple scenes of queasy violence in this movie. There’s a scene where a guy gets some fingers chopped off in a brutal way and then is stabbed with a huge knife right in the chest. That is one example. There aren’t a whole lot of violent scenes in the film, but when there’s violence it is definitely in the upper PG-13 realm. In the end I was left to wonder just what the moral of the film was. If something amazing had happened at the end of the movie and some real lessons were learned I might feel differently about the film, but as it is, it left me with a blah feeling. I just wondered why I had spent the last two hours watching it.

Almost better than the original, at least as good--which is GREAT!

I wouldn't say this movie was spectacular, but it was pretty darn good. The tenacious personality of the girl was very odd to me. Under what circumstances did she develop such vivaciousness? Why was she so Hell-bent on personal revenge for her father? Her sense of absolute personal justice for here father knew no bounds. I have a hard time understanding this. Perhaps its because I'm not really like her. If someone shot my Dad, yeah, I would be angry. But I would leave it to the authorities and God to sort out the punishment. I wouldn't go on some vigilante crusade.
Nonetheless this story pulls you in and doesn't let go until the final scene. Bridges did a great job as a Cowboy.
This movie is a high PG-13 for some pretty grotesque death scenes by knife and Gun. This is not a show for little kids. But perfectly fine for older teens and adults. Definitely worth your time.

This is a very well done movie. The acting is superb, as will as the cimenatography. It is rated PG-13 for violence and some desturbing images, but other than that it is clean.

One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. It has a great storyline and kept my interest the whole time. Also it feels realistic.

The violence is a little much, but the rest is not too bad.

  • Mature 17+ | Not Worth Your Time

    Bad acting! Unnecessarily violent.

  • ages 11+ | Worth Your Time

I found nothing offensive, but some may have felt a scene or two too violent

Great movie. Good script, good acting. Violence was a bit graphic - just turned my head a lot.

Violence and gore content was uncomfortable for me a few times. I was warned, so I just turned my head. Excellent script and dialogue.

Outstanding old style western. The girl is great in her first performance.

  • ages 14+ | Worth Your Time

Very well done film. A little violent but fabulous acting.

  • ages 12+ | Worth Your Time

The theme of revenge is a violent theme. The movie also had a bit of humor to take the edge off the violence.

  • ages 12+ | Worth Your Time

There is gun violence and a scene with a stabbing, but the language is fairly clean and the movie is overall positive with a good message.

  • ages 14+ |

It was very violent, especially for children, but even for adults...things I had never seen before and would rather get out of my mind. Cute story and well acted but violent!

  • ages 14+ | Worth Your Time

This was a great movie. The Coen brothers pulled off another fantastic film and told a good story. If it weren't for the couple of very graphic scenes I would say this was a great family film.

    Great story and actors.

  • ages 11+ | Worth Your Time

The film, like most efforts of the Coen brothers is excellent. Unlike most of the Coen's body of work, it is palatable for the PG-13 audience. A 'best picture' candidate for sure.
