Sucker Punch is a 2011 action-fantasy thriller film, directed by Zack Snyder and co-written by him and Steve Shibuya. It is Snyder's first film based on an original script. The film stars Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, and Oscar Isaac. The storyline follows the fantasies of a young woman who is committed to a mental institution, as she makes a plan to escape the hospital before suffering a lobotomy. The film was released in both conventional and IMAX theatres in the US at midnight on March 25, 2011. It was released to a generally negative reception from critics, who considered the film poorly written and acted despite the visual flair, and significantly underperformed at the box office, barely recouping its budget with $89 million worldwide. In the 1960s, a 20-year-old girl nicknamed "Babydoll" (Emily Browning), is institutionalized by her sexually abusive stepfather (Gerard Plunkett) at the Lennox House for the Mentally Insane after she is blamed for the death of her younger sister. Blue Jones (Oscar Isaac), one of the asylum's orderlies, is bribed by Babydoll's stepfather into forging the signature of the asylum's psychiatrist, Dr. Vera

I really liked this one! I watched it with my GF and she liked it more than I did, and she doesn't usually like these kinds of movies! I even got it for her birthday last year, she does like movies with strong female leads. Then I heard some movie critics talk about it. Usually I don't let critics sway my opinion, but after thinking about it, I really couldn't defend it at all!! The various "stories" in the movie are so fun to watch, and the graphics are so well done that I didn't really notice that there wasn't much of a story. It was almost like watching someone else playing the most expensive video game ever made! really cool to watch, but that was about it! If they cut this movie down into 5 or 6 mini movies and you watched it on YouTube it would be brilliant!! but, strung together in one sold movie makes it hard to defend. That said, I am going to watch it a few more times in the near future!! ;-)

This movie had very dark themes.

  • Mature 17+ | Not Worth Your Time

The whole set up of girls being put into a insane asylum to be used as hookers is a dark topic. The ending left such a dark and depressing mood.

  • Mature 17+ | Not Worth Your Time

The combination of violence and sex is too much for young teenagers.

  • ages 16+ |

This movie has not received, and will not receive, many positive reviews. For a flick that advertises itself as a sort of SciFi action romp with girls being sexy, it delivers a completely different experience. Sure, there are still fantastic action scenes and the girls are pretty, but there aren't any 'sexy' parts and the action scenes are part of an abstract exploration. And that's where this movie delivers. It is not as much a linear storyline as it is an extended abstract metaphor about learning how to grow up and achieve one's own potential ... about accepting what has happened, but working to take control of what will happen ... about being completely in charge of your own life and the power that can come from making that decision. Most people will miss the punch of this movie and find it lacking, and that's fine. Myself, I found a beautiful abstract exploration of transition from child to adult, from victim to conqueror, and one person's acceptance that despite all the messed up things that happen in this life ... there is a God that watches over us and directs us.

From 'Imdb' reviews, this movie is VERY harsh and intense, with profanities, sex, and violence. What father or mother would think it's good for a 13-year old to see all this?? Also, why would adults think this is GOOD for adults to see for that matter?
